La Chaux-de-Fonds, Neufchâtel canton, Switzerland. The town is a stunning aggregation of old factory floors, working class ancient buildings and bourgeois houses, and was added in 2009 to the UNESCO World Heritage List. While the factory-shaped town used to be the world capital for the watch-making, it seems now to be stuck in time. But it surprisingly has a few rock'n'roll vivid shallows.
I must have read a few things about the punk scene of the city in a review of the Toulousan fanzine Dig It (RIP). Or perhaps was that during the few talks we had with Mr Occhio about the Digler's brothers ? You know, their acid rock/psyche band Hallelujah Mother Helpers, and their label Burning Sound Records, that co-released Mr Occhio's Hard Boiled album ten years ago... If you dig a bit deeper, you'll find also another little structure, Tahini Records x (sub-label of the Swiss indie rock Hummus Records), that lately released the last single of Love Cans, and the first one of Sun Cousto.
When the members of the Digler's tribe put aside, for a short while, the seriousness and the psychedelia of the band Hallelujah Mother Helpers, they let their primary rage burst out on the lo-fi side-project called Love Cans. The trio band plays then some really powered-up, raw 60's garage tunes, fulfilled with farfisa organs, trashy, sharp guitar riffs and wild beasts' shouts, the whole thing being surrounded by a fun aura full of good laughs (check the funny video clip of the song Primitive !). Love Cans looks like a dirty version of the Fuzztones, the same way as their Swiss fellows in Sex Organs do, or the Italian Intellectuals did fifteen years ago...
After two singles and the equivalent of an EP, all released in a six years' time on Sacred Hood & Burning Sound Records, Love Cans is finally back with the two well-named new songs, Primitive and Bad Trip.
Some primitive rock'n'roll, indeed !
La Chaux-de-Fonds, située dans le canton suisse de Neufchâtel, est un agglomérat étonnant d'anciens ateliers, de logements ouvriers et de vieilles maisons bourgeoises. En entrant au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, la ville-manufacture, pourtant ancienne capitale de l'horlogerie mondiale, semble d'un seul coup s'être figée dans le temps. Elle n'en possède pas moins quelques bas-fonds rock'n'roll bien remuants.
C'est à travers une chronique de Dig It (condoléances, et éternels respects au fanzine toulousain, comme on dit), et les bavardages de notre ami italiano-réunionnais Mr Occhio, qu'on a découvert le microcosme de cette ville et le groupe acid-rock/psyché Hallelujah Mother Helpers, groupe emmené par les frangins Digler, qu'on retrouve aussi à la tête du label Burning Sound Records (label co-producteur, d'ailleurs, de l'album de Mr Occhio en 2010). En creusant un peu plus, on tombe sur ce micro-label, Tahini Records (sous-label de Hummus Records, structure conséquente du rock indé suisse), qui a sorti, coup sur coup, en fin d'année 2021, le dernier simple de Love Cans, et le premier de Sun Cousto.
La tribu Digler reste à la manœuvre pour ce projet parallèle, en mode trio, et nous livre, avec le groupe Love Cans, deux nouveaux titres, Primitive et Bad Trip. Pour tout dire, ce groupe sent le fun et la rigolade à plein nez (Matez un peu ce clip vidéo du morceau Primitive!), et semble assez peu soucieux de son plan de carrière (six ans d'existence pour 2 singles et l'équivalent d'un EP, tous sortis sur Sacred Hood & Burning Sound Records)
Ainsi, lorsque les deux frangins délaissent parfois le psychédélisme et le sérieux des Hallelujah Mother Helpers, c'est pour lâcher leur rage primaire sur Love Cans, du garage 60's survitaminé, lo-fi et brut de décoffrage, et dégoulinant d'orgue farfissa, de riffs trasheux et tranchants et de hurlements de bêtes sauvages. On pense au son de leurs compatriotes des Sex Organs, des italiens d'Intellectuals d'il y a 15 ans... ou à une version cradingue des Fuzztones. Primitif, quoi!
